Why do my AI clips look blurry? Five causes, in the order to check them

A vertical crop keeps 56% of the frame, then scales it up. Add a 360p source or a platform re-encode and clips turn to mush. How to find which step did it.

"The clips look worse than the original" is the second most common complaint about AI clipping tools, after mid-sentence cuts. Unlike mid-sentence cuts it usually has a specific, findable cause, and it's usually one of five. Here they are in the order that finds the culprit fastest.

First, the arithmetic that applies to every clip

A 16:9 frame becomes 9:16 by keeping a vertical column of it. At any resolution, that column is 56% of the width and 100% of the height. So:

Every vertical clip made from a widescreen source is an upscale unless the source is 4K. That's unavoidable, and it's why a 1080p source that looked crisp on YouTube looks merely fine as a Short. What turns "fine" into "blurry" is one of the five things below stacking on top of it.

1. The tool fetched a 360p version of your video

The most common cause for link imports, and invisible until you look.

When you paste a YouTube URL, the tool has to download the video. Cloud servers download from datacenter IP addresses, and YouTube serves those addresses a 360p stream and refuses everything higher. So the tool gets 640x360, crops it to 203x360, and scales that by 5.3x to fill a phone screen. The result looks like a webcam from 2009.

How to check: download a clip and look at any text or a hard edge (a shirt collar, a microphone). At 5x upscale, edges are smeared bands; at 1.8x they're soft but defined. Or re-run the same video as an upload and compare — if the upload is sharp and the link import isn't, this was it.

We route the HD fetch through a residential network so link imports come through at 1080p or 1440p; what that involves. A tool that doesn't will show exactly this symptom on every link import and never on an upload.

2. The source itself was soft

Screen recordings at odd resolutions, a Zoom recording (usually 720p or lower, heavily compressed), a stream VOD at a bitrate tuned for live delivery rather than quality. The tool can't add detail that isn't there, and the 9:16 crop makes any softness 1.8x more visible.

How to check: play the source full-screen and pause on a face. If it's soft there, it'll be softer in the clip. The fix is upstream: record locally at 1080p or better, export at a high bitrate, and for streams, use the local recording rather than the platform's VOD.

3. The export resolution is 720p

Free tiers on several tools export at 720p (see the comparison). A 720x1280 file uploaded to a platform that re-encodes everything to a 1080x1920 target comes out softer than a native 1080x1920 one, because the platform is now upscaling and recompressing.

How to check: right-click the file, look at its dimensions. The fix is to export at 1080p (or 4K, for a 4K source), which on most tools means a paid tier. Ours exports 1080p on free and 4K on Pro.

4. The platform re-encoded it hard

Every platform recompresses uploads, and the result depends on the bitrate of what you gave it. A clip that's already been compressed to a small file gets compressed again, and the artefacts compound. Fast motion and confetti-like detail (crowds, grass, water) suffer most.

How to check: compare the downloaded clip with the posted version on the same phone. If the file is sharp and the post isn't, the platform did it. The fix is to upload the highest-bitrate file the tool gives you — never one that's been sent through a chat app first, which recompresses it again on the way.

5. The crop is on the wrong part of the frame

Not blur exactly, but reported as "looks bad" just as often: the crop landed on an empty part of the shot, so what you're looking at is a wall, a shoulder, or the gap between two people, scaled up. A close-up of nothing looks low-quality even when it's technically sharp.

How to check: is the speaker centred in the clip, for the whole clip? If the crop drifts, or holds still while the speaker moves out of it, that's the reframing, and it's a different fix.

The short version

  1. Link import? Check for the 360p problem first. It's the big one.
  2. Upload sharp source; the crop makes softness nearly twice as visible.
  3. Export 1080p minimum, 4K if the source is 4K.
  4. Upload the tool's file directly, not a copy that's been through chat.
  5. If it's sharp but looks wrong, it's the framing, not the resolution.

True 4K vertical needs 4K source pixels — a 4K export of a 1080p source is an upscale, whatever tool made it. Ours caps link imports at 1440p deliberately (a two-hour 4K file is 8–15GB), so a 4K export from a link is real HD detail scaled 1.3x, while a 4K upload exports natively.
