GetClipMachine vs Descript: text-based editor vs automatic clipping

Descript is a text-based video and audio editor: you edit the transcript and the video follows. "Create Clips" exists as an AI feature for pulling highlights out of longer recordings, but the product's centre of gravity is editing, not automatic clip discovery.

That makes this less a like-for-like comparison than a question about which half of the job you want software to do.

On the numbers here. Read from Descript's public pricing page on 2 September 2026, linked at the bottom. Their pricing table presents monthly and annual figures side by side and the framing is easy to misread, so treat the prices below as indicative and confirm on their page.

Transcription covers 25 languages on paid tiers. Free output is watermarked; Hobbyist gives 1080p watermark-free, Creator and Business 4K. Monthly AI credit allocations run 400 / 800 / 1,500 by tier, gating features like Underlord, Studio Sound and Eye Contact.

GetClipMachine is €15/month flat: unlimited videos, unlimited clips, unlimited source minutes, 1080p with 4K export on Pro.

Two limits stacked

Descript meters two separate things: media hours and AI credits. Ten hours a month on Hobbyist is generous for editing a weekly show; it's less generous if you're feeding it long recordings purely to extract clips, because the whole recording counts against the allowance whether you use two minutes of it or all of it.

The AI-credit layer is the one that surprises people: the features that do the interesting work draw from a separate monthly pool.

We meter neither. There's one number: €15.

What Descript does better

This isn't close, and it shouldn't be. It's a much larger product:

• A real editor. Text-based editing is genuinely excellent and we have nothing comparable. If you need to restructure a clip, cut filler, or reorder sentences, Descript does it and we don't.
• Studio Sound, filler-word removal, eye-contact correction, green screen, overdub: a deep AI toolkit.
• Multitrack and speaker detection on higher tiers.
• Screen recording and full production workflow.
• 4K on Creator at ~$24/mo.

If your bottleneck is editing, Descript is the better purchase and it isn't a close call.

What's different here

• Clip discovery is the product, not a feature. We read the whole transcript to rank moments by hook, flow, value and trend, and hand you a scored shortlist with reasons.
• No media-hour or credit meter.
• Sentence-accurate boundaries, measured. We found 7 of 10 clips were cut mid-sentence and fixed it, the full write-up.
• Made for long sources. 3h+ inputs are routine.
• Cheaper, if clipping is genuinely all you need.

Where we're the weaker pick

• You want to edit. This is the main one.
• You need Studio Sound, overdub, filler removal or screen recording.
• You're already paying for Descript and its Create Clips output is good enough: a second tool is hard to justify.
• You need speaker detection across multitrack recordings.

Short version

Descript if editing is the job and clip extraction is a bonus.
